Lake Erie College Theatre Department and Rabbit Run Theater present “An Evening of Contemporary One Acts”

Rabbit Run
March 25, 2016

The Theatre Department at Lake Erie College and Rabbit Run Theater will present “An Evening of Contemporary One Acts” consisting of short plays written by celebrated author Shel Silverstein. This performance is the fourth and final installment of The Studio Series, a four-part collaborative theatrical season funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and an additional grant from the Lake County Visitors Bureau.

Directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Jerry Jaffe, the one acts will be performed April 7, 8, and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and April 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the C.K. Rickel Theatre in Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts. The theatre is located off of Gillett St. on the Lake Erie College campus, 391 W. Washington St., Painesville, OH.

Though he was known primarily as the author of several beloved children’s books including Where the Sidewalk Ends and The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein was also a prolific dramatist. Unlike his books, his plays are definitely not meant for children. Ironic with a dark sense of humor, these plays display Silverstein’s characteristic wit and command of language, but in a more adult medium. Some of the topics covered in these seven short pieces include homelessness, counter culture and suicide.

“Though Silverstein still makes these topics funny and enjoyable, I wouldn’t bring young kids,” Dr. Jaffe explained. “I would probably consider this performance to be rated PG-13.”

The evening will highlight some of Silverstein’s more well-known works including “Bus Stop”, “The Life Boat is Sinking” and “One Tennis Shoe”.  The cast is a blend of Lake Erie College students and community members, including renowned dancer/choreographer Tom Evert founder of the company DANCEVERT.  Also in the cast are LEC Theater majors Connor McCarthy and Taylor Miller who are performing in several of the one acts.

On Friday, Apr. 8, guests may add on a pre-show stop at the Steele Mansion in Painesville. Appetizers will be served for an additional $15/person followed by a self-guided tour of the mansion. A cash bar will be available. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Reservations may be made at rabbitrunonline.org. The Steele Mansion is located at 348 Mentor Ave., directly across from Lake Erie College.

Lighting design for the performances is by Christopher J. Meyers and the technical director is Lake Erie College alumna Julie Harter. Harter is also designing and building the set and costumes.

Tickets for the show are $8 for general admission, $6 for seniors, and free for LEC students, staff and faculty. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at rabbitrunonline.org. All seats are general seating. Parking is free.

“An Evening of Contemporary One Acts” is made possible in part by funding through the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lake County Visitors Bureau and the Ohio Arts Council.
