There is an accomplished artist in our own backyard! Nancy Nelson-Brotz not only creates awesome art right here in Madison; she also shares her gifts through teaching Visual Arts at Rabbit Run. Nancy teaches year round, both in our Winter and Spring sessions and during the summer with our Visual Arts kids camps.
Nancy’s love of arts education began in high school. “I had a great teacher, Mrs. Gelston. She would allow us to go in and create independently,” remembers Nancy. “I wanted to be just like her!”
Since that time, Nancy’s own career has straddled both creating her own art and teaching the arts. “My current passions are mosaics and oil pastels – I made stained glass for many years, but fell out of love with the static forms; then I discovered mosaics.” With mosaics, Nancy can alter her design even in the middle of a project. “I am a very free flowing artist!”
We appreciate Nancy’s easy-going nature at Rabbit Run – she is an excellent visual arts instructor in part because of it. “I started at Rabbit Run many years ago, basically as a sub, and I have been teaching there ever since.” Nancy’s daughters have been involved with Rabbit Run throughout their arts education as well, from Kindermusik to dance to theater camp. Rabbit Run has been “a huge part of my kids’ upbringing; I hope it will stay with them their whole lives!”
This school year, Nancy will teach “Learning to Paint,” “Learning to Draw,” “Mixed Media,” and “Beginning Sculpture,” as well as lead weekly Art Clubs at both the Madison and Perry Public Libraries. You can also find Nancy’s artwork in local galleries – keep an eye out for a Nelson-Brotz original!
